Dear Sir or Madam

I am writing to inform you that I wish to move into a new room next semester. I would like to have a single room because I find the present sharing arrangement inconvenient.

I am dissatisfied with my present roommate because of his inconsiderate behavior. For one thinghis friends are constantly visiting himfor anotherhe regularly makes calls at night. In additionhe often uses my things without asking for my permission. Under such circumstancesI find it difficult to concentrate on my studiesand I am falling behind in my assignments.

I believe you will agree that the only solution is for me to move into a room of my ownwhere I will be free from these kinds of distractions. I would be very grateful if you could arrange a single room for mepreferably not in the same building.

Sincerely yours

Tom Williams

3.ر䷶

Dear Mary

I am sorry to hear that you have been ill for days and hope you have got better now. You have studied so hard that you have had no time for exercise. This is harmful for your health. You have been in poor health these years. I feel it would be more beneficial to your health if you could take more exercise in future.

Do not think that time spent in exercise is wasted. Exercise can improve your physical constitution and refresh the mind. After one or two hours of exercise you can study better. Only when you have a strong body can you keep on studying without felling fatigue. Otherwise your study will be interrupted from time to time by fatigue or sickness.

I am not advising you to devote all your time to exercise. What I want to say is that exercise is as useful and important as your study. I hope you can take at least one hours exercise every day after you are recovered. I would be more than happy to see you have a stronger body.

Sincerely yours

John

We'd better rearrange the showing schedule for next week's film.

As you knowwe are going to show the filmThe Smithsnext week in the projection roomwhich holds only fifty people comfortably without overcrowding. It is not big enough for the whole staff to see the film at the same time. So I suggest we show the film in different times. For examplewe can arrange 40 people to see the film there on Tuesday at 300 p.m.and the remaining 40 on Thursday at the same time.

If there's any problem about this arrangementplease let me know.

How New York Became America's Largest City

In the 18th century New York was smaller than Philadelphia and Boston.Today it is the largest city in America. How can the change in its size and importance be explained

To answer this question we must consider certain facts about geographyhistoryand economics.Together these three will explain the huge growth of Americas most famous city.

The map of the Northeast shows that four of the most heavily populated areas in this region are around seaports. At these points materials from across the sea enter the United Statesand the product of the land are sent there for export across the sea.

Economists know that places where transportation lines meet are good places for making raw materials into finished goods. That is why seaports often have cities nearby. But cities like New York needed more than their geographical location in order to become great industrial centers.Their development did not happen simply by chance.

About 1815when many Americans from the east coast had already moved toward the westtrade routes from the ports to the central regions of the country began to be a serious problem. The slow wagons of that timedrawn by horses or oxenwere too expensive for moving heavy freight very far. Americans had long admired Europe's canals. In New York State a canal seemed the best solution to the transportation problem. From the eastern end of Lake Erie all the way across the state to the Hudson River there is a long strip of low land. Here the Erie Canal was constructed. After several years of work it was completed in 1825.

The canal produced an immediate effect.Freight costs were cut to about one-tenth of what had been.New York Citywhich had been smaller than Philadelphia and Bostonquickly became the leading city of the coast. In the years that followedtransportation routes on the Great Lakes were joined to routes on the Mississippi River. Then New York City became the end point of a great inland shipping system that extended from the Atlantic Ocean far up the western branches of the Mississippi.

The coming of the railroads made canal shipping less importantbut it tied New York even more closely to the central regions of the country. It was easier for people in the central states to ship their goods to New York for export overseas.

Exports from New York were greater than imports.Consequentlyshipping companies were eager to fill their ships with passengers on the return trip from Europe.Passengers could come from Europe very cheaply as a result.

Thus New York became the greatest port for receiving people from European countries. Many of these people remained in the city.Others stayed in New York for a few weeksmonthsor yearsand then moved to other parts of the United States. For these great number of new Americans New York had to provide homesgoodsand services.Their labor helped the city be come great.

How New York Became America's Largest City

New York was once smaller than Philadelphia and Bostonbut now it is America's largest city because of geographyhistory and economics.

New York was located at the seaport where materials were imported to the US and the products of the US were sent abroad across the sea.The city was further developed when the Erie Canal was completed in 1825.This linked Lake Erie to New York via the Hudson River and the cost of transporting goods to those who had settled inland was cut down.In additionthe Great Lakes were soon linked to the Mississippi.Laterrailroads tied New York closer to the central stateswhose goods were exported via New York.Fewer goods were importedso cheap passages were available from Europe.New York became the main port for receiving Europeansmany of whom stayed in the city and helped it become great.

SubjectShip Accident off West Coast of The Yangtze RiverNo Casualties.

DateApril.42005

Yesterday evening two boats collided in thick fog in The Yangtze River not far from Wu Han. One was a cargo ship carrying lumberapparently on its way to The Yangtze River. The other was a National ferry on its regular run from Jiu Jiang to Wu Han.

Howeverbecause of the weather conditionsthe captains did not realize the danger until a few seconds before the collision took place. Consequentlythere was no time for them to prevent the accident.

Fortunatelythere were no casualties among the crews or passengersbut both ships suffered badly damages.

A spokesman for the port authorities said that a committee would be set up to determine the cause of the collision.

Sincerely yours

Li Nan

When we use the word "love", we do not simply mean an attraction to a person of the opposite sex, which is a very narrow definition of the word. Love is emotional strength, which can support us no matter how dark the world around us becomes. In fact, throughout history people of many different cultures have regarded love as the noblest of human emotions.

As an example of the power of love, we should remember how the Chinese people of all nationalities respond to the call to help the victims of natural disasters every year. Although their incomes are still low by international standards, people all over the country do not hesitate to donate whatever they canbe it money or goodsto help their needy fellow citizens. Moreover, they do this with no thought of gain for themselves.

In my opinion, the best way to show love is to help people who are more unfortunate than we are. We should always be ready to give a helping hand to those who are in trouble, no matter whether they are family members or complete strangers. In this way, we can help to make the world a better place, for the darker the shadows of sorrow become, the more brightly the lamp of love shines.

There are two major arguments that can be made for studying at home. First, as advances in the electronic media have brought the whole world of scholarship into the home via the Internet and educational courses on TV, the classroom is no longer the only place for acquiring knowledge. Second, it is widely held that a person studies better in the familiar surroundings of his own home and when he can arrange his own study time.

But we must not lose sight of the fact that there are advantages to studying in the classroom, too. Being surrounded by people of roughly the same abilities and interests can be a great stimulus to acquiring knowledge, whereas studying in solitude at home is boring for many people. More importantly, there can be no substitute for a good teacher, who must not only be able to impart facts and theories, but also to appraise and encourage his students.

Given the choice between these two methods of learning, I prefer the classroom. This is because I am the sort of person who finds it difficult to concentrate on study in the midst of household chores, and disturbances from visitors and telephone calls. The classroom environment, I feel, is the only one in which most people feel comfortable applying all their energies to the all-important task of acquiring knowledge.

A culture of one nation may become international, which is beneficial for all mankind. Since China has opened its doors widely to the outside world, many people from different countries want to visit China. They will come to accept and love Chinese culture as a whole. In addition, Chinese culture should be shared generously with foreign people, who show great interest in it. Meanwhile, as more and more foreigners come to China, they bring aspects of their own culture to share with the Chinese people. In this way, people from various nations in the world will be able to acquire a better understanding of each other and live peacefully together.

The rapidity of the population's aging has made it more urgent for the adoption of countermeasures. No doubt, the key is to build a solid economic foundation. Meanwhile, importance should be attached to overall social progress by changing the backward situation in social security, welfare and service. What's more, family care and community services should also be encouraged.

What I Have Lived For

Three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, have governed my life: the longing for love, the search for knowledge, and unbearable pity for the suffering of mankind. These passions, like great winds, have blown me hither and thither, in a wayward course, over a deep ocean of anguish, reaching to the very verge of despair.

I have sought love, first, because it brings ecstasyecstasy so great that I would often have sacrificed all the rest of life for a few hours of this joy. I have sought it, next, because it relieves lonelinessthat terrible loneliness in which one shivering consciousness looks over the rim of the world into the cold unfathomable lifeless abyss. I have sought it, finally, because in the union of love I have seen, in a mystic miniature, the prefiguring vision of the heaven that saints and poets have imagined. This is what I sought, and though it might seem too good for human life, this is whatat lastI have found.

With equal passion I have sought knowledge. I have wished to understand the hearts of men. I have wished to know why the stars shine. And I have tried to apprehend the Pythagorean power by which number holds sway above the flux. A little of this, but not much, I have achieved.

Love and knowledge, so far as they were possible, led upward toward the heavens. But always pity brought me back to earth. Echoes of cries of pain reverberate in my heart. Children in famine, victims tortured by oppressors, helpless old peoplea hated burden to their sons, and the whole world of loneliness, poverty, and pain make a mockery of what human life should be. I long to alleviate the evil, but I can't, and I too suffer.

This has been my life. I have found it worth living, and would gladly live it again if the chance were offered me.
